During the "cold war" years in post WWII Germany, American "dependents', the children of American Civilian and Military personnel, attended transplanted American style schools throughout Germany and other countries hosting American forces. Every effort was made to keep American High School culture intact, including the iconographic Football Teams, Pep Squads, Homecomings, Senior Proms etc.
It helped made the illusion seem a little more real.
In the back of your mind you still knew you were less than 9 hours by tank from the front line at the Fulda Gap where a substantial quantity of the world's nuclear arsenal was focused . And not too many Stateside High School students got bombed by terrorists at lunch, or had "Beiruit Blocks" along the streetside perimeter...except perhaps in Los Angeles.
Nevertheless, escape from the coccoon of the American installations and there was another world waiting. The plurality of the overseas experience changed many of us fundamentally. The friendships we shared formed fast and have endured to epic proportions. Follow the links to related sites if it interests you.
